ARLIS/NA Mid-Atlantic Seeking Nominations for the 2016 Vice-Chair

ARLIS/NA Mid-Atlantic is seeking nominations for the 2016 Vice-Chair. Seize this opportunity to serve your Association and develop your leadership skills.

The Vice-Chair acts as chief executive officer in the event that the Chair is unable to serve, assists with programming, keeps meeting minutes, and automatically serves as Chair the following year.

The Chair acts as chief executive officer of the Chapter. With the assistance of the Vice-Chair and Treasurer, the Chair plans the activities of the Chapter, communicates about meetings, serves as chair of all special project committees, submits the annual report and otherwise liaises with officers and committees of the national association, and shall automatically become the Immediate Past Chair in the following year.

The Vice-Chair must be a 2016 member of the local and national chapters. The elected officer should make every effort to attend the national annual conference. Students are eligible to serve, keeping in mind the three year term of service.

2016 ARLIS/NA Wolfgang M. Freitag Internship Award

The Art Libraries Society of North America is now accepting applications for the 2016 Wolfgang M. Freitag Internship Award. The award grants $3000.00 to the selected recipient to support a 150 hour internship in an art library or visual resources collection.

The deadline for applications is December 4, 2015.

The Award will be announced and presented during convocation ceremonies at the ARLIS/NA + VRA 3rd Joint Conference in Seattle, Washington, in March 2016.

Who May Apply

This internship aims to represent the multifaceted nature of our field by providing internship opportunities to students currently enrolled in, or having completed within the last 12 months, a graduate program in library/information science, art history, architectural history, architecture, studio art, or museum studies. Applicants must have completed at least 10 credits of their graduate coursework before the application deadline.

Vacancy Announcement: National Gallery of Art

The National Gallery of Art Library is seeking applicants for a student assistant position in the Reader Services Department.

Library Technician (Circulation)

The primary purpose of this position is to assist with a wide variety of circulation and reader services for Gallery staff and outside readers.

Duties include retrieving materials from the stacks and reshelving returned materials, providing information and instruction on circulation procedures governing use of the Library collection, and maintaining automated and manual departmental files.

Knowledge and Skills:

Applicants should have a basic knowledge of library collections, online catalogs, and circulation desk procedures, familiarity with using personal computers, an ability to type and file accurately, and an ability to work cooperatively with other staff members and library patrons. Reading knowledge of a Western European language (French, German, or Italian) is desirable.

Qualifications:

In order to qualify for this position, applicants must be registered at least as a half-time student, and be able to provide certification of student status, including a current class schedule. Work schedules will be determined to accommodate the student’s class schedule and the Library’s work requirements. The position is limited to 20 hours per week while classes are in session; full-time employment is available during semester and summer breaks. The incumbents earn sick and annual leave based on the amount of hours worked.

Smithsonian Libraries: Opportunities for Research 2016-2017

The Smithsonian Libraries, situated at the center of the world’s largest museum complex, is a vital part of the research, exhibition, and educational enterprise of the Institution. The Libraries offers exceptional research resources ranging from 13th-century manuscripts to electronic journals. We are happy to offer the following fellowship opportunities for the 2016-2017 academic year.

The Baird Society Resident Scholar Program: $3,500 per month for up to six months to support scholarly research in the Special Collections of the Smithsonian Libraries in Washington, D.C. and New York, NY, in an extensive range of subject areas. Doctoral students and post-doctoral scholars are welcome to apply. Collections include printed materials on world’s fairs; manufacturer’s commercial trade catalogs from the 19th and 20th centuries; natural history rare books (pre-1840 works on topics such as botany, zoology, travel & exploration, museums & collecting, geology, and anthropology); air and space history (late 18th to early 20th centuries); James Smithson’s library; rare materials in European and American decorative arts, architecture, and design (18th to 20th centuries); and history of art and artists (exhibition catalogs, catalogues raisonnés, serials, dissertations and artists’ ephemera).

The Dibner Library Resident Scholar Program: $3,500 per month for up to six months for individuals working on a topic relating to the history of science and technology who can make substantial use of the Dibner Library’s Special Collections in Washington, D.C. Doctoral students and post-doctoral scholars are welcome to apply. The Dibner Library of the History of Science and Technology has manuscripts and rare books dating primarily from the 15th to the 19th centuries. Collection strengths are in the fields of mathematics, astronomy, classical natural philosophy, theoretical physics (up to the early 20th century), experimental physics (especially electricity and magnetism), engineering technology (from the Renaissance to the late nineteenth century), and scientific apparatus and instruments.

The Margaret Henry Dabney Penick Resident Scholar Program: $45,000 for nine consecutive months to support scholarly research into the legacy of Patrick Henry and his political circle, the early political history of Virginia, the history of the American Revolution, founding era ideas and policy-making, as well as science, technology, and culture in colonial America and the Early National Period. Available to post-doctoral scholars only. Senior scholars are particularly encouraged to apply.

The deadline for all programs is January 15, 2016 for appointments between September 1, 2016 and August 31, 2017. Fellowship recipients are expected to be in residence during their appointments. Symposium at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, October 16-17

Register now for Shifting Terrain: Mapping a Transnational American Art History at the Smithsonian American Art Museum on October 16–17, 2015!

The increasing internationalization of the study of American art has altered the topography of the discipline in ways that are widely acknowledged but not yet clearly defined. This two-day event will map out the changes that are occurring in the field of American art as it becomes enmeshed in a global art history. Sessions will examine current trends of inquiry and suggest new directions for scholarship. Shifting Terrain is the capstone event in the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s five-part series The Terra Symposia on American Art in a Global Context, initiated in 2006 with support from the Terra Foundation for American Art.
